(You see, my bookmarks are overloaded and I can’t remember what the web address is about! ) So, to all blog owners, I hope I have your generous permission to use your photos and to link to your blogs.

My First Machine Applique

Mum complained that the Charlie I made for my sister is nicer than hers!! Looking back at the pic from my previous post, I must say there’s a plain ‘canvas’ for me to ‘play’ with.

And with my new machine to experiment with, I thought I try my hand with some applique.

  DSCN1818
I used the blanket stitch from my new machine to applique the leaves.
Then I made two yo-yos and stacked them up.
Next, I top it up with a button and…
ta-da..a flower !!!

  DSCN1816

Yup, I still prefer to leave the rest of the ‘canvas’ empty.
Looks ‘clean’ as we should be doing…..
cleaning and greening the earth by using reusable shopping bags!

A Charlie for Mummy

She told me to make one that suits her age ..she being 76 can’t be using a bag that ‘shouts’ CUTE . So, I chose a safe colour … brown and beige. No ‘cute’ embroidery this time.

DSCN1813 What do you think? All from scraps of fabric. The best part is I get to use decorative stitches from my machine.

DSCN1811

I love this curvy stitch!

Mummy, do you like it?!

Embroidered Quilted Coaster

Was working on some stitchery last month. Finally made use of it. With an abundance of scraps, I made a coaster.

DSCN1808

Played around with my new sewing machine too! Tried using as many different stitches as possible.

DSCN1807

Didn’t place the strips as planned ..doesn’t look quite right. But that’s how I learn..from mistakes. Anyway, will be giving this away. Any takers?!

Mummy is next!

Called mum this morning and she told me to “make as many shopping bags as you can for me ” !!! What?! Is she going on a shopping spree?

(#o#)

Nope. She is getting ready to green the earth! And she gave me a ‘little lecture’ about saving the earth from plastics!

So, she just about helped me plan out my projects for the next month ….making ‘as many shopping bags’ for her! I’ll be seeing her next month for the coming Chinese New Year, yippee!

Charlie..here I come!!!

Get lots of inspiration from Burdastyle.

Phew!!! I so want to put up all the Charlie variations here but there are 126 of them! So, go check it out yourself *o*

For My Sister

She loved it so much that she e-mailed me and gave me a deadline to make one for her! I’m talking about this bag.

DSCN1376
She used it during her frenzy shopping while back at our hometown. It was very gentle on her shoulders, fitting snugly under her arms that she insisted I make the exact one for her, right to the length of the strap! Don’t worry, I still have the pattern. In case you have lost yours, you can get it here.

image
So, I took out this patchwork  which I stitched in July last year…

DSCN1805
…and made a Charlie for my sister!
If you look closer( click on the pic) you’ll notice I topstitched the edges using one of the 50 decorative stitches from my new machine!
  DSCN1806
I made a little change. I added some cord at the ‘neck’ opening of the bag  which is used to the tie up the bag into a little package . Isn’t it cute?!

I’m Back With A New Machine!!

Have been away..back to my hometown for a long deserving break. Ate and ate and ate!!! There’s no place like home..where you were born *o*

And I came back with a new sewing machine!
image
It has….

50 built-in stitches
2 one-step buttonholes
6 direct-stitch button selection
Push-button stitch selection - select your stitch easily with buttons, not dials
Auto tension - ensures stable stitch quality for every type of fabric
Vivid screen: LED - Clear, crisp display of stitch selection

Not comparable to what most of you may have but it’s a great upgrade to the ‘dinosaur’ that I have been using (*o*) . But the greatest of all..it’s a gift from my sweetheart!

Nomad Hobo from Hotpatterns

What is a Hobo bag?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hobo bag is a style of handbag or purse that is typically large and characterized by a crescent shape, a slouchy posture and a long strap designed to wear over the shoulder. Hobo bags are made out of soft, flexible materials and tend to slump, or slouch, when set down.

Here are some hobo bags I'm 'drooling' over !!!

gucci-duchessa-hobo-bag

The Burberry Hobo reminds me so much of those gorgeous bags Lappeklipp made.
I particularly love this one and this one.

Meanwhile, I'm content to have those 'out-of-reach' bags sit in my blog for now!!! ^o^

A few days ago, I got a link to this Hobo. The Nomad Hobo from Hotpatterns. It has a square base, a seamed front & back and wide handles. I can't recall the exact date but the free pattern expires Feb 2010. So you better hurry and download the free pdf file before it's gone! I haven't tried the pattern yet, so....

So Sew Easy Schlep Bag

According to Dictionary.com

schlep

[shlep] Show IPA verb, schlepped, schlep⋅ping, noun Slang.–verb (used with object)
1. to carry; lug: to schlep an umbrella on a sunny day.

That's what I need... a bag for me to 'schlep' my purchases on my shopping day!

This bag was posted at sentimentalstitches.net way back in 2006! But I stumbled upon it when I was in a bag making frenzy some months back (^o^)

You can download the pattern here. It comes with complete instructions on the making process.

I used three different fabric,of which two are scraps from blouses I made . The japanese cotton blouse didn't have much leftovers. So, I made a log cabin quilt block with it. So, you can actually use your favourite block as the focus point of your bag! I did not use 8" squares. Instead, I made using 6" squares and half triangles from 6.5" squares.

For the assembly, just follow the instructions from the pdf you downloaded from here.

For the lining, I used two 15.5 inch squares, 0.25inch seam allowance included.I used a thin layer of sponge as the batting. I like the cushiony soft feel of sponge, yet it gives body and support. *o*

Here it is.. a cute tote. It has a square base which makes it sit perfectly on the table.

That's the side view. It's cool to see how the construction of the bag 'arranges' the squares into diamonds!

I quilted the lining, added a hook strap for my keys and a magnetic button for closure.

This time, I embellished my bag with a brooch from an old t-shirt. Hmmm..that's vintage brooch !
^o^

Dressing Up My Mobile Phone

Remember that pintucks patch I yanked out from my blouse? Well, I didn't throw it into the bin but kept it instead. It took me some time stitching up those pintucks *_*

Lucky me, I stumble across http://sewchristine.blogspot.com of the United Kingdom. She has some pretty pdf tutorial which you can download. When I saw a tutorial for iphone sleeve, I said "Scotty, beam it over...quick!!!!" ^o^

You can download the pdf here. You have to go over to her blog for more tutorials.
The instructions were clear. But at step 8, instead of machine stitching, I whip stitch the edges together with double strand of thread.( hehehe..I'm a handstitch buff!)

I love it! Does it remind you of fish gills ??!! Hmmmm....

Finished.... at last !

It started with this........

But it didn't look impressive enough...so, I had it all taken out..stitch by stitch
(Didn't even bother to try it on. Put it on a hanger and stuffed some dark coloured fabric to snap this photo!)
:(

Made a new one..double row of twisted pintucks.

And I'm very pleased with the outcome !
